It's Been a While!
So it's been a little while since I last wrote...
This morning, via the wonder of procrastinating on Instagram, I discovered the beautiful blog written by Mirta at Modern Botanics. (Here if you'd like to take a look). Her atmospheric photos of Lisbon drew me in, but what really resonated was a piece about how she'd struggled with writing a blog. She articulated for me the reason I've totally failed to publish a blog piece for the last year: "I had the feeling I had to write a blog because that’s what you do when you have a small handmade business and you try to advertise it." In my book, 'Because I should' is never the best motivation for doing anything!
With this in mind, I'm not going to beat myself up about it. It probably is about time though, to fill you in on what I've been up to for the last 12 months...
Last year was a lot about learning
Learning to dream bigger than I've dared in the past, and learning the skills I need to breath life into those dreams. Photography skills, small business skills and really getting to grips with screen-printing. My main focus has been working on my first screen-printed wedding stationery collection. It's just about ready to launch now and I'm a combination of thrilled and petrified about letting it out into the world!
Getting the collection right has taken much longer than I could have anticipated, mainly because technically it's been a massive learning curve. It might have been a much simpler option to have someone else print my designs, but to design well, I think it's imperative to understand the medium intimately. To understand a process' possibilities and limitations, there's really no substitute for getting your hands dirty. Ultimately, the finished product is infinitely better for all the mistakes en-route. (Besides, there's something magical about physically pushing the ink through the screen which I absolutely love!) At this point I really need to thank Sarah at Marshfield Screen Print. Her patient mentoring, cups of tea and cat chat over the last year have been totally invaluable!
So here's to 2016: the new collection launch, its challenges, and (hopefully) its triumphs!
